KEEP THIS TO 1-3 – PAGES LONG (excluding reference page)

Author: Sara Baase
Date of Publication:
Book: Gift of Fire
Sections read: 6.1 to 6.3

1.       (Knowledge)Tell three interesting elements of this chapter:
a.       Computers and communications networks are causing changes in the size of businesses and the number of people who are self employed.

b.       A successful technology eliminates some jobs, but creates others.

c.        The new jobs created by computers are different from the jobs eliminated

2.       (Comprehension) Summarize what is being discussed within this chapter?
This section of the chapter explains the fear and questions about computers by relating it to how computers have eliminated certain jobs but has created new jobs as well that are different from the jobs eliminated. Also, this chapter talks about the change in skill levels since computers have made transition to new jobs more difficult because of the broad impact.

3.       (Application)Name a specific example or NEW solution for this type of problem/similar situation in society or that you have experienced – be specific and explain?

A specific example for this type of problem in society is how electric meter readers disappeared as utility companies installed electronic device that broadcast meter readers to company computers.

4.       (Analysis)Address ANY that apply. How can you compare one of the situations in this chapter to something that does not relate to computers, technology, or the Internet? Be sure to reference the chapter and your solution. What ideas NEW can you add to the issue that is being presented within the reading? Try to connect what you have by reading this article and how it applies to the stages in Bloom's taxonomy in 2 full sentences.
The situations in these section relates to computers, technology, or the Internet. This is because the sections talks about how computers have created certain jobs and have eliminated jobs as well. New idea I can add to the issues presented in the section is how computers have made job searching more easily than before when a person had to go job hunting by foot.

5.       (Synthesis) Address all that apply. Do you agree with what is being said within the article (Why/Why not? Back up with FACTS)?  What new conclusions can you draw about this (or other topics) after reading this material?
I agree with what is being said in these sections about Job destruction and creation, this is so because the computer have created many jobs  which is good, and have eliminated certain jobs as stated in page 309 on how banks have reduce the number of customer service employees when they began using computers to handle customer inquiries. I can conclude after the reading that computers have created more jobs than those eliminated.

6.       (Evaluation) Address all that apply. Judge whether or not this topic is relevant in today’s society? Evaluate why you are viewing the topic in this manner based on your experiences. What ethical evaluations (see Chap1-1.4 for exp of Ethics) or decisions were made/can be assumed from this chapter?  What new ideas will you make after reading this chapter?

The sections in this chapter are relevant in today’s society because the advances of Internet and technology in today’s society. I am viewing this based on my experience with online banking where I don’t have to walk to the bank or call customer service and I can access my account information online.
