Chapter2: video and reading connections

Name: Edmund Barfour                                                                                Class time:  CIS 105 MWF

1.      Explain data mining:
The process of collecting data for future purposes

2.      Relate data mining to privacy issues, specifically citing something you read in Baase, Orwell, etc.
By analyzing data
Data mining can be relate to privacy issue due to the fact that with data collected from all previous activities can be used against a person in the future and that is against a person’s freedom.

3.      Explain Ashley Paynes’s situation:
Ashley Payne was a teacher at a public high school who had travel to Europe and took pictures of her having fun at her vacation, and some of the pictures had her holding alcohol in her hands and posted the pictures on Facebook. Her school principal called her to the office and gave her the ultimatum of resigning or been suspended, she resigned and hired a lawyer to challenge her principal decision.

4.      Were Ashley Payne’s rights violated?  Did the school district have just cause for asking for her resignation?  Base your answers off of what you have learned about privacy, show connections to Baase, Orwell, etc and support your opinion.
Ashley’s rights was violated, I think the school district did not have to ask her for resignation. Based on what I have read about Baase, Orwell I learned her privacy was violated and also everything you do personally on the Internet can be used against you

5.      Summarize the video “Police surveillance cameras are stopping crime or invading their privacy by Alex Dunbar.”

In the video there were cameras around certain neighborhood and interviewed people about their reaction and how they feel about the cameras around.

6.      Are police surveillance and traffic cameras are stopping crime or invading your privacy? Base your answers off of what you have learned about privacy, show connections to Baase, Orwell, etc  and support your opinion.

Police surveillance and traffic cameras are stopping crimes and invading privacy at the same time.

Chapter 2: Privacy, part 1

Name: Edmund Barfour                                                                                              Class time: 12PM
KEEP THIS TO 1-3 – PAGES LONG (excluding reference page)

Author: Sara Baase
Date of Publication:
Book: A Gift of Fire
Sections read: 2.1 to 2.2

Knowledge)Tell three interesting elements of this chapter:
1. There are thousands of databases, both government and private, containing personal information about us.

2. Communication on web sites and e-mails are recorded and can be copied, forwarded and widely distributed, and read by others years later.

3. Government has access to large masses of such data.

(Comprehension) Summarize what is being discussed within this chapter?

This chapter explains and talks about privacy of the Internet and how it can protect or affects a person’s freedom. Also, the chapter shows how the government can access information on a person through search engines or e-mails. Moreover this chapter covers invisible information gathering, and principles for data collection and use

(Application)Name a specific example or NEW solution for this type of problem/similar situation in society or that you have experienced – be specific and explain?

A specific example of this situation I have experienced is when I once posted a picture on my MySpace account and the picture happened to appear on Google has I googled my name and found my picture on a public website.

(Analysis)Address ANY that apply. How can you compare one of the situations in this chapter to something that does not relate to computers, technology, or the Internet? Be sure to reference the chapter and your solution. What ideas NEW can you add to the issue that is being presented within the reading? Try to connect what you have by reading this article and how it applies to the stages in Bloom's taxonomy in 2 full sentences.

Specifically I can’t relate a private investigator going through someone’s trash for evidence to prove a point to computers, technology, or the Internet. (Basse, pp.45, 2010) a new idea I can add to this issue is the idea of how people can access someone’s information on a social network website without hacking into their computer because with social network a person’s information is clearly noticeable.

(Synthesis) Address all that apply. Do you agree with what is being said within the article (Why/Why not? Back up with FACTS)?  What new conclusions can you draw about this (or other topics) after reading this material?

I agree with what was said in the reading because a person’s freedom is not respected. I can conclude by stating that I have learned how not to avoid privacy theft, and am more conscious on what I do on the Internet.

(Evaluation) Address all that apply. Judge whether or not this topic is relevant in today’s society? Evaluate why you are viewing the topic in this manner based on your experiences. What ethical evaluations (see Chap1-1.4 for exp of Ethics) or decisions were made/can be assumed from this chapter?  What new ideas will you make after reading this chapter?

This topic is very relevant in today’s society because almost everyone has access to the Internet. The ethics that can be assumed from this reading is “natural right” which views ethical behavior as acting in a way that respects a set of fundamental rights of others, including right of freedom. I will be conscious on what I do on the Internet to prevent disturbance of privacy.

Chapter 1 assignment

Name : Edmund Barfour                                                                                                                    Class time: MWF 12:00

Author: Sara Baase
Date of Publication:
Book: A Gift of Fire
Sections read: 1.3 to 1.4

1. (Knowledge)Tell three interesting elements of this chapter:
a.  More jobs have being created since ATM was introduced.
b.  Banks have open more hours after ATM was introduced.
c.  Changes in technology usually require adaptive changes in laws, social institutions, business policies, and personal skills, attitudes, and behavior.

2. (Comprehension) Summarize what is being discussed within this chapter?
This section of the book explains the pros and cons of technology by observing various sources that technology plays a major part in. Also discuss a variety of ethical view that relates to technologies such as utilitarianism, natural rights and Deontological theories which emphasize duty and absolute rules, to be followed whether they lead to good or ill consequences in particular cases.

3. (Application)Name a specific example or NEW solution for this type of problem/similar situation in society or that you have experienced – BE SPECIFIC AND EXPLAIN?
The book states “We can make a personal choice, for example, about whether to give out our e-mail address or other personal information, according to our individual values and situation.” From my perspective the way our society depends on technology makes it hard for an individual to make a personal choice not to give out their e-mail address, but again the choice is ours. Similar situations I have experience that was discussed in this situation are errors with my account transactions, this happened when my account debited twice on one purchase. The procedure to recover my money back was a hustle and that is a disadvantage about technology.

Though I thought Deontological theories had no relation to computers, technology, or the Internet, it actually does in a way that it states we should follow rules of behavior that we can universally apply to everyone, and this explain how we accept technological changes. The new idea of how technology makes us more dependent and less active. With much enhanced technology programs that we rely on makes us socialize less in person than on the Internet.

5. (Synthesis) Address all that apply. Do you agree with what is being said within the article (Why/Why not? Back up with FACTS)?  What new conclusions can you draw about this (or other topics) after reading this material?
I agree with what was said in this book because technology has both advantages and disadvantages as stated in the book technology such as the ATM took away jobs and created jobs also in certain areas. After reading this article I drew the conclusion on people’s preference on whether to adjust to new technology or not to adjust.

The topics in this chapter are much relevant in today’s society. I am viewing this topic in this manner based on my experience with ATM errors. Ethical evaluation such as Deontological theories, utilitarianism, and natural rights can be made from this chapter.

GMO's: Assignment 1

Edmund Barfour
CIS 105
02/13/12
                                                            GMO's: Assignment 1
1)      Remember when you were a tour guide for an Alien? The Alien is back and wants to understand what a GMO is. Explain this information to the Alien.
·         GMO’s are the result of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species are placed in plants or animals.
2)      State the controversy associated with GMO’s.
·         The controversy associated with GMO’s are how there are linked to toxic and allergic reactions and can affect the organs of the consumer.
3)      Are people’s reactions to GMO’s different in various regions of the world?
Explain with references.
·         Yes people’s reactions are different in various regions in the world, an example is how in Europe some countries support GMO’s and others do not. Also how in the article GMO’s divide Europe it states that only “six EU countries allow MON810 maize be grown on their soil.” On like in America where GMO’s are grown in their soil and produces more crops with GMO’s as Layton states in the article “FDA rules won’t require salmon’s labels.
4)      What’s your reaction to this topic? Explain with references.
·         I was amazed by how GMO’s has impact cultivation of crops, and the mechanics of how there are injected for faster growth or to enhance certain nutrients in vegetables and fruits. Also, in the article “GMO Basics” states that “GMO’s are linked to toxic and allergic reactions” this makes GMO’s do more harm than good.
5)      Can GMO’s be changed?  Should they be changed? Explain with references.
·         GMO’s cannot be changed base on the fact that in the article “Genetically Modified Food and Organism” states how rice with increased iron and vitamins alleviate chronic malnutrition in Asia countries, this shows how in certain region of the world benefit from GMO’s while other countries don’t think it’s of significant.

      6) While reading "Institute for Responsible Technology. GMO Basics (Also explore at least two of the other tabs on this page:
http://www.responsibletechnology.org/gmo-basics
"What were the two tabs that you explored? How did the information presented affect what you thought about GMO's?
·         Environmental Dangers and GMO Health Risks. The information provided in this tabs affected my thoughts about GMO’s is how GM injected gene can create super diseases.

7)      Typing out the exact quote from any of the readings (and referencing it) list one powerful statement that you read.
·         “Genetically modified foods have been linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals.” Institute for Responsible Technology, GMO Basics. http://www.responsibletechnology.org/gmo-basicshttp://www.responsibletechnology.org/gmo-basics
·         This quote is powerful because it summarized the danger of GMO’s in one sentence. Also, the quote shows the danger of GMO’s and how they can affect people due to studies performed on lab animals.
